French citizens are going to the polls on Sunday in one of the most important elections in the country’s history, and the two leading candidates are making a final push! French President Nicolas Sarkozy is thought to be slightly behind Socialist challenger Francois Hollande. But polls suggest that nearly a quarter of voters have yet to make up their minds. Increased Security For Bahrain F1
In Bahrain, officials are beefing up security in anticipation of protests surrounding this weekend’s Formula One race. Activists have vowed to incite “three days of rage” over the decision to hold the Grand Prix. Last year’s race was cancelled due to rampant civil unrest. The mood there is very tense. Troops have fired tear gas and stun grenades to scatter anti-government protesters near the state’s capital.
Shark Kills Champion Surfer
Tragedy has struck in South Africa, where 20-year old champion surfer David Lilienfeld was killed by a great white shark. Lilienfeld was paddling out on the Indian Ocean when the 16-foot beast struck. His brother managed to pull him to shore, but he died of his injuries before rescue teams arrived on scene. Locals are blaming a National Geographic film crew that had been filming in the region and allegedly trying to lure sharks to their boat.
Positive Outlook For Americans
If you’re an American with a positive outlook about the country’s direction, you’re not alone! According to a CNN/ORC International survey, 43% of Americans think that the nation is heading in the right direction. That’s 3 points higher than the last poll from February, and 20 points up since last August. However, 57% still have a gloomy outlook.
Facebook To Go Public
Several sources are saying that the social network Facebook is set to go public on May 17th. If and when that happens, they’re expected to seek a valuation of a whopping $100 billion. Based on the shares available, that would value the company at about $40 per share. The valuation would put them on par with corporate powerhouses like McDonald’s and Visa.
Good Morning America
The long-running “Today” morning show on NBC has had their ratings streak ended. Since 2095, “Today” has ruled the Neilsen ratings. But rival “Good Morning America” on ABC has beaten them for the first time in 16 years. According to Neilsen, GMA beat them out for the week by about 31,000 viewers.
